5 Card Stud rules

One thing's for sure – five card stud is one of the most popular poker games out there – and there will always be a certain niche of poker enthusiasts who enjoy it and seek it out both online and game rooms across the country. Despite the growing popularity of games like Holdem and Omaha, 5 card stud has a huge audience of players. Five card stud is one of the fastest games around – and this only adds to its popularity –especially among players who become bored with slower playing games. It is not uncommon to find online poker room stats that show as many as one-hundred hands of 5 card stud being played in just one hour. Let's review the rules that govern the play of 5 card stud before you head on over to your favorite online poker room for a few hands.

Rules Review for 5 Card Stud

• The highest traditional poker hand is the winning poker hand in 5 card stud.
• Aces can be played on both the high end and the low end when making a 5 card stud hand.
• There can be no more than three "raises" in each round of 5 card stud.

In 5 card stud, the cards "speak". This means that the cards on the table are the determinants of the winning hand, no matter what is said about the cards during the game. In online game play, this is less of a worry than playing in person (of course, there's always the chat box). But for this purpose, what is said about the game – if proven untrue may disqualify the winner.

In 5 card stud, an ante is required before the game begins or before any cards are dealt. The ante in online poker rooms can be as small as a quarter or as much as several hundreds of dollars, and is dependent upon the stakes of the table at which you are playing. Rules for Playing 5 Card Stud

Once players have "anted up", the deal begins. Each player is dealt one card facing down and one card facing up in a clockwise manner around the 5 card stud table. Face up cards are called porch cards.

The player with the lowest porch card will make a forced bet that is usually half of the low limit but can be the full limit amount. As an example, if the game is called at $1/$2, the player making the forced bet would be required by 5 card stud rules to bet at least fifty cents, but can choose to bet $2.

Once this player has acted by betting, each player around the table will choose to bet, call, or fold their hands. Players remaining in past this point will receive card number three, facing up. A round of betting follows at the low limit of the betting stakes. From here on out, the player who holds the highest porch card will act first.

After this round of betting, the fourth card is dealt onto the porch (facing up). Another round of betting ensues. Betting is now at the higher limits. The last card, card number five, is dealt, also facing up, onto the porch, followed by the final round of betting.

The winner is determined by the 5 card stud poker hand according to standard poker hand rankings.
