5 Card Stud Strategy

The fastest game in the West – or anywhere for that matter – is 5 card stud. Five card stud has a monumental and consistent following by poker lovers and die hard poker enthusiasts all around the globe. You will be hard-pressed to find an online poker network that doesn't offer this fast-paced and easy to learn game. And while 5 card stud is a simple game to master, those who want to be profitable and increase their chips by playing the game will need to have an effective 5 card stud poker strategy in place. Let's look at how the pros take 5 card stud by "the horns" and come out on the winning side of the table.

Playing Live Cards

Five card stud is an observer's game. You'll find out quickly when playing 5 card stud that you have to keep an eye on the porches of your competition (their face up cards) in order to play your hand to its fullest. This means that of all the games out there, this is one game that you can really tell the difference between cards that are 'live' and those that are 'dead' as it applies to the hand you are holding. Once you have received your third card when playing 5 card stud, you will have an excellent idea of the strength or weakness of your hand. Observation

Bluffing in Five Card Stud

Bluffing is possible in 5 card stud, although bluffing should be used with caution and infrequently. In 5 card stud, the cards speak, so be sure to bluff in actions, not with words. Also, be unpredictable with your bluffing. If you never bluff, or if you bluff often, you become an easy opponent that can be milked for chips at will. Keep your bluffing inconsistent to make sure that you're a more successful bluff in 5 card stud (or in any poker game).

To Play Slow or Play Fast

When playing 5 card stud, it's important that you are inconsistent with the speed at which you play as well. While fast play is a good way to rid yourself of some of the competition around the 5 card stud table, it also reduces the pot, which means that you will profit less. Slow play consists of checking and calling – and it keeps the maximum number of participants in the game to build up the pot and make playing the game much more profitable and exciting.
